JPEGMAFIA on Vinyl: Where to Start and Where to Go Next

Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks was born in Flatbush in 1989 to Jamaican parents, taught himself to make beats at fifteen, and enlisted in the Air Force at eighteen. He served through the Iraq War, stationed in Kuwait, Germany, Japan and North Africa, and it was while based in Okinawa and Tokyo that he started putting music out as Devon Hendryx. He took an honorable discharge after speaking up about the conduct of his superiors, landed in Baltimore in early 2015, and became JPEGMAFIA.

He has always described himself as a producer first and a rapper second, and the catalog backs that up. He produces, mixes and masters nearly everything himself, and the records sound like it: samples left ragged at the edges, drums pushed until they distort, vocals that swing from a whisper to a scream inside a bar. Nothing is smoothed over. The seams are the style, and once you hear a JPEGMAFIA beat you can pick his hand out of a lineup forever.

The catalog matters because almost nobody else has managed it. A generation of rappers borrowed the internet's texture and made it sound tidy. He made it sound like the internet actually feels, funny and hostile and overloaded at once, across six studio albums, without handing the controls to anybody else. Devon Hendryx / JPEGMAFIA - Ghost Pop Tape

Before the name, there was this. Ghost Pop Tape came out in 2013, self-released while he was stationed overseas and still calling himself Devon Hendryx, and Godmode remastered and pressed it as a double LP in 2023. It is rawer and more melodic than what came after, closer to broken electronic pop than to rap, but every instinct that defines him later is already in it.

JPEGMAFIA - Veteran

Recorded between 2015 and 2017 in his apartment and at Baltimore's Bell Foundry, Veteran arrived in January 2018 on the small experimental label Deathbomb Arc and turned him from a local secret into a name people argued about. He produced, mixed and mastered all of it. "Baby I'm Bleeding," "1539 N. Calvert" and "Real Nega" hit like sirens, and nothing is sequenced to let you breathe. It remains the best argument for what he does, and one of the defining records of the back half of the 2010s.

JPEGMAFIA - All My Heroes Are Cornballs

He cut something like ninety-three tracks for this one and kept eighteen. Released September 13, 2019 on EQT Recordings, All My Heroes Are Cornballs is the record where the singing arrives and the noise gets prettier without getting safer, with Vegyn co-producing one track and the rest handled at home as usual. He spent the run-up telling people it would disappoint them, a joke about expectations that doubles as a mission statement. It is his warmest album and his best entry point. A single-LP edition sits alongside the original double.

• The 2019 EQT Recordings album, cut down from roughly ninety-three recorded tracks
• His most melodic and most approachable full-length
• Available here as the original double LP and as a single-LP edition

JPEGMAFIA - LP!

This is the one with the story attached. LP! came out October 22, 2021 through Republic and EQT in two different shapes: an "online" version with substitute samples for streaming, and an "offline" version, longer by eight minutes, that keeps the samples he actually wanted. He has been plain that the offline one is the real album. In December 2022 a remaster of it was pressed to vinyl with new artwork, a lyric book and the instrumentals, which makes the record on the shelf the definitive version and the stream the compromise. That inversion almost never happens.

• The vinyl carries the remastered "offline" version, his stated full vision
• Eight minutes longer than the streaming edition, including "Hazard Duty Pay!"

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - Scaring the Hoes

Two of the most recognizable voices in rap, one Roland SP-404SX, no interest in meeting anyone halfway. Scaring the Hoes landed March 24, 2023 on AWAL with JPEGMAFIA producing every track, and he framed the sessions as a practice session on purpose: "this is what we would sound like in the 90s with no Pro Tools." Danny Brown's yelp and Hendricks's snarl trade bars over loops that cut off mid-phrase. It is abrasive, very funny, and the most enjoyable record either has made in years. The four-track DLC Pack, out that July, is the companion piece.

JPEGMAFIA - I Lay Down My Life for You

Out August 1, 2024 on AWAL, I Lay Down My Life for You leans harder into guitars and live-band weight than anything before it, and it is the rare JPEGMAFIA album with company in the room: Vince Staples, Denzel Curry and Buzzy Lee turn up, with extra production from Kenny Beats and Flume. Six months later he expanded it by fourteen tracks as the Director's Cut, which is closer to a sequel than a deluxe edition. A UK import pressing is here too.

• The 2024 AWAL album, his heaviest and most guitar-driven
• Guest turns from Vince Staples, Denzel Curry and Buzzy Lee
• Three pressings on the shelf, including the fourteen-track Director's Cut

JPEGMAFIA - Experimental Rap

The sixth studio album, out May 21, 2026 on AWAL, and the title is immodest by design: he has said it reflects his standing as a dominant figure in experimental hip-hop. Experimental Rap runs twenty-five tracks in under fifty-three minutes, co-produced with Billy Ray Schlag, with Buzzy Lee back on "Bridges on Fire." The singles "Babygirl," "War Over Land," "¥ (Yen)" and "$ (Money)" set it up across April and May. Short, blunt pieces stacked end to end, a format he has circled for years. A white pressing sits next to the black.

Why it's worth purchasing:

• His sixth studio album, out May 2026 on AWAL
• Twenty-five tracks, co-produced with Billy Ray Schlag

If You Like JPEGMAFIA

• Death Grips: the obvious ancestor, and proof that abrasive can be a whole career rather than a phase.
• Danny Brown: his Scaring the Hoes partner, and a solo catalog with the same appetite for beats nobody else would rap on.
• clipping: noise music with a rapper in front of it, built from the opposite direction and landing nearby.
• Denzel Curry: a guest on I Lay Down My Life for You, and his closest peer in how hard he swings between modes.
