Lil Wayne on Vinyl: A Guide to Tha Carter Series and Beyond

Dwayne Carter Jr. signed to Cash Money Records at eleven, joined the Hot Boys at fourteen, and put out his first solo album, Tha Block Is Hot, at seventeen. That head start explains a lot. The spine of the catalog is Tha Carter, a series that opened in 2004 and reached a sixth installment in 2025. Go D.J. and Bring It Back are the way in.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II/2

Released December 6, 2005, Tha Carter II is the first in the series made without Mannie Fresh, who had left Cash Money the year before. The Heatmakerz, The Runners, T-Mix and Cool & Dre fill the gap, and Wayne answers by rapping more, and denser, than he ever had. Fireman, Hustler Musik and the Robin Thicke collaboration Shooter carry it.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III/3

June 10, 2008, on Cash Money and Universal Motown. Tha Carter III arrived after two years of mixtapes and leaks so relentless that he answered them with more free music rather than less, and it collects the payoff: Bangladesh's A Milli, Jim Jonsin's Lollipop with Static Major, and Mr. Carter alongside Jay-Z. Sessions began in 2008 and were interrupted by a jail sentence at Rikers Island, after which the album was rebuilt from scratch and issued August 29, 2011 on Young Money and Universal Republic. Tha Carter IV is the widescreen entry, with Bangladesh back for 6 Foot 7 Foot, Drake on She Will and T-Minus, Polow da Don and Timbaland filling out the board. The rock detour Rebirth and I Am Not a Human Being came between it and Tha Carter III.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter V/5

Finished around 2014 and then held for four years while Wayne and Cash Money fought in court, Tha Carter V finally came out on September 27, 2018, his birthday, months after the suit was settled and he was free of the contract. Swizz Beatz, DJ Mustard, Metro Boomin and Mannie Fresh produce; Uproar, Mona Lisa with Kendrick Lamar and Don't Cry are the anchors.

Lil Wayne - I Am Music

His first career-spanning compilation, out March 31, 2023 on Young Money and Republic, with the 2LP following for Record Store Day Black Friday that November on translucent ruby vinyl. I Am Music pulls eighteen tracks from Tha Carter through Tha Carter V and past them into Rebirth, I Am Not a Human Being and the Young Money compilation, and opens with Kant Nobody, a new recording built around a DMX vocal.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter VI/6

Seven years after Tha Carter V and five after Funeral, Tha Carter VI landed June 6, 2025 on Young Money and Republic across nineteen tracks. Boi-1da, Wheezy, Charlie Handsome and Mannie Fresh handle production, and the guest list runs from BigXthaPlug, Big Sean and 2 Chainz to Wyclef Jean, Bono and Andrea Bocelli, with his sons Kameron Carter and Lil Novi appearing too.

• Why it's worth purchasing: the newest chapter, and the one that closes the loop back to Mannie Fresh.
• Why it's worth purchasing: Hip-Hop with BigXthaPlug, the most direct thing he has cut in years.
• Why it's worth purchasing: completes the Carter run on one shelf, 2004 to 2025.
