Record Store Day 2026: Best Practices for Getting the Records You Want
If you’re planning to celebrate Record Store Day 2026 on Saturday, April 18, consider this your survival guide.
For vinyl collectors, Record Store Day is one of the most exciting days of the year. It’s part treasure hunt, part community event, and part all-day crate digging marathon. With hundreds of limited releases, long lines, and exclusive pressings that are first-come, first-served, a little preparation can make all the difference.
Whether this is your first RSD or you’re a seasoned early-morning line veteran, here are the best practices for making the most of the day, from lining up smart to scoring the exclusives at the top of your list. Not sure where to attend? Check out GOOD TASTE Records all day event!
Do Your Homework Before the Day
The best Record Store Day experiences start before you even leave the house.
The official 2026 release list was announced well in advance, and the most in-demand titles will absolutely move fast. Every store carries a different selection, so be aware of what will be at the shop that you're attending.
Before April 18, make a list with three tiers:
Must-have titles
The releases you’re willing to line up early for.
Nice-to-have titles
Records you’d love to grab if available.
Bonus finds
Used records, standard releases, or catalog titles you’ve been hunting.
This helps you stay focused once the doors open and the rush begins.
Get in Line Earlier Than You Think
Here’s the honest truth: if you want highly limited exclusives, early means early.
Most stores open between 8–10 AM, but lines often start forming hours beforehand. Some collectors arrive before sunrise, especially for titles with extremely small press runs. These are rain-or-shine events so make sure you check the forecast in case you might be standing in the rain, snow, or heat.
A good rule of thumb:
- Top-tier exclusive / highly hyped artist: 2–4 hours early
- Moderately in-demand releases: 1–2 hours early
- Casual browsing: arrive after the morning rush
Bring:
- coffee
- water
- a portable charger
- weather-appropriate clothing
- a tote bag for later in the day
Comfort matters. Standing in line should be fun, not miserable.
Understand That RSD Is First Come, First Served
One of the biggest misconceptions for first-timers is thinking they can reserve titles.
Official Record Store Day exclusives are always first-come, first-served, with no holds or pre-orders allowed. Many stores also limit purchases to one copy per customer.
Even if a store ordered a title, they may receive fewer copies than requested. Go in with realistic expectations:
- you may not get every exclusive
- some titles disappear quickly
- stores receive varying quantities, despite how many they actually ordered
The key is prioritization.

Don’t Ignore the Used Bins
This is one of the most overlooked Record Store Day tips.
Yes, the exclusives bring everyone through the door — but some of the best finds of the day are often sitting in the used bins.
Many stores stock extra used vinyl, fresh trade-ins, and rare catalog titles specifically for the event. This is where real collectors win.
Sometimes the best score isn’t the limited color pressing everyone came for — it’s the clean original pressing or the nicely priced used copy you weren’t expecting to find.
Expect More Than Just Exclusive Records
Record Store Day is about more than buying records.
Most independent stores turn it into a full-day event with:
- live DJ sets
- artist appearances
- giveaways
- coffee and snacks
- merch drops
- community hangouts
- special sales on used vinyl
Many stores also bring in local vendors, host in-store performances, or run all-day music programming. GOOD TASTE Records will have live DJs all afternoon long with new DJs playing every hour.
The atmosphere is part of what makes RSD special.
It’s one of the few days where vinyl culture feels fully alive in person.
Stay After the Morning Rush
A lot of shoppers leave once they get their exclusives. That’s a mistake.
Once the line dies down, the store becomes much easier to browse. Staff has more time to talk recommendations, the used bins are easier to dig through, and you can actually enjoy the experience.
Some stores also restock floor space throughout the day.
If you have the time, stay longer than you planned. Or come back after you've had a chance to rest from the morning.
If You Miss Out, Don’t Panic
Missing a release isn’t the end of the world.
Many stores list reaming RSD titles online after the in-store event window closes, often the following day or later that weekend. GOOD TASTE Records will post any remaining stock online at 8am on Sunday, April 19.
So if you strike out in person, check online inventory afterward. Just remember, part of the fun is thrill of the hunt!
