Red Hot Chili Peppers on Vinyl: Where to Start and Where to Go Next

The Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in Los Angeles in 1982 around Anthony Kiedis, Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons, and for six years they were a local punk-funk act with more nerve than songs. Slovak's death in 1988 could have closed the book. Instead the band brought in an 18-year-old guitarist named John Frusciante and, three months later, a drummer named Chad Smith, and the lineup that would define funk rock fell into place.

Everything after that is really a story about one guitarist leaving and coming back. Frusciante walked out in May 1992, mid-tour, at the peak of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. He rejoined in April 1998 and the band made Californication. He left again in July 2009, and returned in December 2019 in time for the pair of albums released in 2022. Dave Navarro held the chair for One Hot Minute, Josh Klinghoffer for two albums after that, and both of those stretches sound like different bands.

That arc is why the Chili Peppers shelf at GOOD TASTE Records looks the way it does. What we carry is the Frusciante run on Warner: the 1991 breakthrough, the 1999 comeback, the 2006 double album now back for its twentieth year, the two 2022 reunion records, and the hits compilation in the middle of it all.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik (180g)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik (180g) Vinyl LP

Rick Rubin moved the band into a rented Los Angeles house in the spring of 1991 and recorded them live in the rooms, and the result turned a cult act into a stadium band. Seventeen tracks swing from the strut of "Give It Away" to the plain-spoken ache of "Under the Bridge," with Frusciante given room to play melody instead of just riffing. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the one record here that nobody should skip.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • The Rick Rubin session that remade the band, on 180g
  • "Under the Bridge," "Give It Away," "Suck My Kiss" and "Breaking the Girl" in one sequence
  • Frusciante and Flea at their most locked-in, recorded live in a house

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (180g)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (180g) Vinyl LP

Frusciante came back in April 1998, and by June 1999 the band had this: fifteen songs cut at Cello Studios with Rubin again at the desk, built on clean guitar tone and actual singing rather than the old shouted funk. "Scar Tissue," "Otherside" and "Road Trippin'" are the sound of four people who had almost lost each other. Californication is the most played Chili Peppers record in most houses, and the 180g pressing is the everyday copy.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • The comeback album, Frusciante's first after rejoining in 1998
  • "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," "Around the World" and "Californication" across two sides
  • 180g pressing of the band's most approachable front-to-back listen

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Greatest Hits

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Greatest Hits Vinyl LP

Released in November 2003, this sixteen-track collection is the one Chili Peppers record that crosses the lineups, pulling from Mother's Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, One Hot Minute, Californication and By the Way, including the Stevie Wonder cover "Higher Ground." Two songs were new at the time, "Fortune Faded" and "Save the Population." Greatest Hits is the practical pick if you want the singles on one record rather than six.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • Sixteen tracks spanning 1989 through 2002, across the Slovak, Navarro and Frusciante eras
  • The only place on this shelf to hear "Higher Ground" and "My Friends"
  • Two songs, "Fortune Faded" and "Save the Population," that appear on no studio album

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium Vinyl LP

Recorded across 2004 and 2005 at The Mansion and Sound City with Rubin, Stadium Arcadium is twenty-eight songs split into two halves the band named Jupiter and Mars, and it is the most guitar-forward thing they ever committed to tape. "Dani California," "Snow (Hey Oh)" and "Tell Me Baby" are the familiar doors in, but the back half of Mars is where the deep listeners live. The standard pressing runs the whole program.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • Twenty-eight songs across the Jupiter and Mars halves, the band's only double album
  • Frusciante's densest playing on record, layered rather than stripped back
  • Rick Rubin's last session with the classic lineup for sixteen years

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium (20th Anniversary Color Pressings)

Warner Records marked the album's twentieth year on October 2, 2026 with the double album spread across four LPs in colored editions. We have two: the Canary Yellow and Apple Red set, and the Brown Smoke and Orange Smoke set that went only to independent record stores. Same twenty-eight songs, more room per side.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • The twentieth anniversary 4LP cut, dated October 2, 2026 on Warner Records
  • Brown Smoke and Orange Smoke is the independent store color, not sold by the chains
  • Four records instead of two means wider grooves for a very loud album

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Unlimited Love

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Unlimited Love (Black Color) Vinyl LP

Frusciante rejoined in December 2019, the band went into Rubin's Shangri-La studio in Malibu, and on April 1, 2022 they put out seventeen songs that sound deliberately unhurried, more interested in groove and texture than in hooks. It is the first album with the classic four since 2006, and it plays like people enjoying each other's company. Unlimited Love on black vinyl is the standard edition.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • The first Frusciante album in sixteen years, cut at Shangri-La with Rick Rubin
  • Seventeen songs that lean into jamming rather than radio shape
  • Standard black pressing, the plain copy for playing rather than shelving

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Return of the Dream Canteen (Deluxe)

The Shangri-La sessions produced more than one album could hold, so Warner split the material and released the second half on October 14, 2022. Another seventeen songs, looser and stranger than Unlimited Love, with a Frusciante guitar solo on "Eddie" written as a tribute to Eddie Van Halen. Return of the Dream Canteen is the deluxe edition.

Why it's worth purchasing:

  • The companion to Unlimited Love from the same Shangri-La sessions, October 2022
  • Seventeen more songs, including the Van Halen tribute "Eddie"
  • Deluxe edition packaging for the most recent studio album

Where else to look

Flea's own record is worth a look next to these. Honora came out on Nonesuch in March 2026, ten tracks that put his bass in a quieter, more composed setting than anything the band does, and there is also an indie exclusive red pressing.

Not every chapter is on this shelf. The early EMI albums, Mother's Milk from 1989, One Hot Minute with Dave Navarro, By the Way from 2002, and the two Josh Klinghoffer albums all matter to the story, but what we carry is the Warner-era Frusciante run described above.

If You Like Red Hot Chili Peppers

  • Foo Fighters: Dave Grohl's post-Nirvana band, built on the same big-room guitar sound, and the deepest alternative rock run we carry.
  • Soundgarden: heavier and in a minor key, but Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil came out of the same early-nineties moment.
  • Stone Temple Pilots: the other Los Angeles band that mixed funk bass into alternative rock, starting with Core and Purple.
  • Pearl Jam: for the arena-scale version of the same period, from Ten through Vitalogy and Yield.
  • Primus: if the reason you are here is Flea's bass, Les Claypool is the next stop.
