Sault on Vinyl: Where to Start and Where to Go Next

Sault turned up in 2019 with no interviews, no press photos, and no explanation. The records simply appeared on Forever Living Originals, credited to four letters, and the music was left to carry itself: British funk and soul built on live drums, low and heavy bass, and vocal arrangements that swing between gospel choir and post-punk chant.

The core of the group is producer Inflo and singer Cleo Sol, working with a rotating cast that has included Kid Sister, Chronixx, Little Simz, Michael Kiwanuka and Jack Peñate. In seven years they have put out more than a dozen albums, almost always on their own terms. Nine, from 2021, was posted for exactly 99 days and then pulled. In November 2022 five albums landed at once as a password-protected download with a five-day window.

That approach has made Sault a collector's catalog almost by accident: short windows, import pressings, and albums that make far more sense heard as a run than as singles. The full discography also runs deeper than what sits in any one shop, taking in 7 from 2019, the two Untitled albums of 2020, Nine in 2021 and the orchestral Air earlier in 2022. Sault - 5 (2019)

The debut, and still the cleanest way in. 5 zig-zags between post-punk funk in the ESG mold, early 1980s boogie and something close to neo-soul, all of it played rather than programmed. It is the least ornate record in the catalog, which is exactly what makes it a good first listen: you can hear the room, the players and the arrangements without the choirs and strings that arrive later.

Sault - 11 (2022)

The most conventionally tuneful of the five albums released together in November 2022. 11 pulls from Afrobeats and blues and has been read as a direct sequel to Nine. Cleo Sol carries most of it, and the arrangements stay warm and unhurried, which is why it tends to be the one people put on first when they work through the five.

Sault - Aiir (2022)

Aiir is the far end of that same week: classical orchestra, soaring choirs, and long passages with no drums at all. It works as a companion piece to the group's earlier orchestral record Air, and it plays best end to end rather than dipped into. Put it on late and it functions more like a score than a soul album.

Sault - Earth (2022)

Earth pulls the opposite way, blending soul with African drum patterns and letting percussion drive the arrangements. Vocals sit inside the groove rather than out in front, which makes it the most physical listen of the five and the one that rewards a bit of volume.

Sault - Today & Tomorrow (2022)

The loud one. Today & Tomorrow has been described as an urgent collection of rock, punk and 1970s funk, with frenetic guitar sitting next to psychedelia-tinged grooves and slower, melancholy blues. Anyone who arrived at Sault through the ballads will not see it coming, and it is the clearest evidence that the group treats genre as a set of tools rather than a lane.

Sault - Untitled (God) (2022)

Untitled (God) closes the five-album run and continues the Untitled line the group opened in 2020. Gospel is the spine here: prayer interludes, full choir, and reflective turns from Cleo Sol and Little Simz. Of the five it is the one most concerned with saying something plainly.

Sault - Acts of Faith (2024)

Acts of Faith was first given away in July 2024 as a single continuous WAV file, mixed to run without gaps, and reached streaming services that December before the vinyl edition arrived in 2025. Chronixx turns up, and hearing the thing sequenced across sides is a genuinely different experience from the file. If you want the pair, 10 followed in 2025 with a reggae lean.

Sault - Chapter 1 (2026)

Chapter 1 is the newest record on the shelf, with Cleo Sol and Jack Peñate involved and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in the credits. The title reads as a reset rather than a continuation, and the music behaves that way too, closer to the songcraft of the early records than to the sprawl of 2022.
