Sufjan Stevens on Vinyl: A Guide to Michigan, Illinois, and Carrie & Lowell

Sufjan Stevens was born in Detroit on 1 July 1975 and moved north to Alanson, Michigan, at nine. He co-founded Asthmatic Kitty Records with his stepfather Lowell Brams and put out his first album, A Sun Came, on it in 2000. He is still putting records out on it, which is the single most useful fact about this catalog: nobody has ever told him what the next record should sound like.

The arc runs through two ideas he kept circling. The first was geography. Michigan in 2003 and Illinois in 2005 were pitched as the opening chapters of an album for every state, a premise he later called a joke and never returned to, but they remain the records that built the audience. The second was the family at the center of the label. Carrie & Lowell in 2015 is named for his mother and the stepfather he started Asthmatic Kitty with, and it strips the banjos and choirs away to almost nothing.

GTR carries five of the albums: both state records, both editions of Carrie & Lowell, Javelin, and the new Christmas set. The guide below walks them in order.

Sufjan Stevens - Michigan

Sufjan Stevens - Michigan Vinyl LP

Released on 1 July 2003 under the full title Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lake State, Michigan is fifteen songs about the state he grew up in, recorded and produced by Stevens himself on modest equipment in Petoskey and a handful of borrowed rooms. It is a homemade record about unemployment, lake towns and family, and it never condescends to any of them. Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid) is the one people quote, and Vito's Ordination Song is the one that closes the door gently.

Why it's worth purchasing

  • The start of the catalog proper, and the cheapest way to hear his voice before the orchestra arrived.
  • Recorded at home on cheap equipment, so the room noise is part of the arrangement.
  • Fifteen songs and more than an hour of music, spread wide enough that the quiet ones get room.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise Vinyl LP

The album is titled Illinois, but the cover reads "Sufjan Stevens invites you to: Come on feel the Illinoise!" and the spelling on the sleeve is the one most people use, including on this pressing. Out in July 2005, Illinoise is twenty-two tracks of banjo, oboe, vibraphone and massed voices, nearly all of it played by Stevens, and it holds Chicago, Casimir Pulaski Day and John Wayne Gacy, Jr. in the same running order without flinching. Early copies carried Superman on the front until the image was pulled, which is its own piece of record-shop trivia.

Why it's worth purchasing

  • The record that made him, and still the widest-angle thing in the catalog.
  • Chicago and Casimir Pulaski Day are the two songs every later album gets measured against.
  • Dense orchestration that vinyl separates better than a phone speaker ever will.

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell Vinyl LP

Eleven songs, released on 31 March 2015, written after his mother Carrie died in 2012 and named for her and Lowell Brams. Carrie & Lowell was assembled in pieces across Brooklyn, Portland, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, and one of its parts was recorded on a phone in a hotel room in Klamath Falls. Death with Dignity, Should Have Known Better and Fourth of July are the three everyone names, and the arrangements get out of their way entirely.

Why it's worth purchasing

  • His most direct writing, with almost no production between the song and the listener.
  • The standard black pressing, and the one to own if you want the album as it was released.
  • A short, hushed record that works far better on a turntable than on shuffle.

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (10th Anniversary Indie Exclusive Violet Color)

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (10th Anniversary Indie Exclusive Violet Color) Vinyl LP

Asthmatic Kitty expanded the album for its tenth anniversary on 30 May 2025, and the 10th Anniversary Edition is the deeper object: a double LP on semi-transparent violet with seven previously unreleased tracks on the second disc, among them demos of Death with Dignity, Should Have Known Better, Eugene and The Only Thing. It comes with a forty-page art book of family collages, drawings and landscape photographs, plus a new essay by Stevens. If you already own the album, this is the version that adds something.

Why it's worth purchasing

  • Seven unreleased recordings, including four demos of songs from the album.
  • A forty-page book and a new essay, which makes it the gift copy.
  • Violet double LP, so the demo disc sits apart from the record itself.

Sufjan Stevens - Javelin

Sufjan Stevens - Javelin Vinyl LP

Out on 6 October 2023, Javelin is ten songs made largely alone at home, with friends layered in on backing vocals and Bryce Dessner of The National on guitar. It swings between solo-voice folk and the full choral build inside single songs, which is the Illinois instinct applied to much smaller material, and it ends on a cover of Neil Young's There's a World from Harvest. The record is dedicated to his partner Evans Richardson, who died in April 2023. There is also a Pink Lemonade color pressing if you want the brighter copy.

Why it's worth purchasing

  • The most recent studio album, and the clearest line back to Carrie & Lowell.
  • So You Are Tired and Will Anybody Ever Love Me? are the two to play first.
  • Home-recorded arrangements that go from one voice to a choir without a seam.

Sufjan Stevens - Worst Christmas Ever!

Sufjan Stevens - Worst Christmas Ever! (Rudolph Red Color) Vinyl LP

Stevens has made more Christmas music than almost anyone in this part of the racks, two box sets worth, and Worst Christmas Ever! is the first time it has been edited down to one record. Carrying an Asthmatic Kitty release date of 6 November 2026, it gathers fifteen selections from Songs for Christmas (2006) and Silver & Gold (2012) and adds On This Christmas (It Only Gets Better), his first new Christmas song in roughly fifteen years. The vinyl is Rudolph red, and it is here on CD and cassette as well.

Why it's worth purchasing

  • One album's worth of the best material from two sprawling box sets.
  • A new song, On This Christmas (It Only Gets Better), that appears nowhere else.
  • Rudolph red vinyl, with CD and cassette for the car and the kitchen.

If You Like Sufjan Stevens

  • Bon Iver works the same territory of solitary recording and choral layering, and Justin Vernon's April Base studio in Wisconsin hosted part of Carrie & Lowell.
  • Big Thief write the plain, specific family detail he does, with a band playing live in the room.
  • Adrianne Lenker is the solo end of that: one voice, one guitar, almost no production.
  • Phoebe Bridgers inherited the trick of a whispered song that detonates once, and Punisher is the proof.
  • Nick Drake is the ancestor for all of it, and Pink Moon is where this kind of quiet comes from.

Where to Go From Here

Plenty of the catalog is not in the racks. Seven Swans from 2004 is the banjo-and-whisper record between the two state albums, The Age of Adz from 2010 is where he picked up drum machines and auto-tune, and The Ascension from 2020 pushed further still. The collaborations run deep too: Planetarium with Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and James McAlister, and A Beginner's Mind with Angelo De Augustine. None of those are here, but they are the next things to look for.
