Video game music spent decades locked inside the machines it was written for, composed under brutal hardware limits by people who treated three sound channels like a full orchestra. That discipline produced some of the most memorable melodies of the last forty years, and the physical world finally caught up: dedicated labels now press these scores on vinyl with real artwork and liner notes, while Japan has kept the CD tradition alive and deep the whole time. Nintendo - 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music CD
Start at the source. Super Mario Bros. arrived on the Famicom on September 13, 1985, and Koji Kondo's overworld theme became the most recognizable piece of music ever written for a game. This Nippon Columbia anniversary set collects the sounds that started it all, pressed in Japan and imported the slow way. It is the title we hand people who want to understand why this whole section of the shop exists.
Akumajo Dracula X - Original Soundtrack (Japan Import) CD
Known in the West as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the 1997 PlayStation classic carries Michiru Yamane's finest score, gliding from baroque organ to smoky jazz fusion to gothic rock, sometimes inside a single track. This King Records import CD presents it under its original Japanese title, complete and unabridged. It remains the high-water mark for the whole Castlevania series, and hearing it front to back makes the case better than any argument we could write.
Nobuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy VII Original Soundtrack CD
Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy music is the closest thing games have to a classical canon, and his complete 1997 score for Final Fantasy VII is its center of gravity: four discs and 85 tracks that carry an entire generation's memories. From the opening bombing run to Aerith's theme, this is game composition at full novelistic scale. The Square Enix import CD edition is the definitive way to own it, and it earns shelf space next to any film score in the shop. The Remake Special Edit disc shows those same themes reborn at orchestral scale.
Metal Gear Solid - Original Soundtrack (Japan Import) CD
Hideo Kojima's 1998 stealth landmark sounded like a paranoid electronic thriller years before that became a genre unto itself: tense pads, industrial percussion, and melodies that surface like a periscope. This King Records import CD collects the original PlayStation score that set the template for two decades of cinematic game audio. If your tastes run toward dark synth records and film scores, this one belongs in your stack.
Mother 1 + 2 - Original Soundtrack (Japan Import) CD
Shigesato Itoi's Mother series, known in the West through EarthBound, carries the most beloved songbook in the RPG canon: music by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka that pulls from doo-wop, exotica, and psychedelia as freely as from chip music. This Toshiba EMI import CD collects the scores from Mother (1989) and Mother 2 (1994) in one place. Funny, warm, and strange in exactly the way the games are, it is the crown jewel of our import wall.
Akari Kaida, Yoshino Aoki - Breath of Fire III (Original Soundtrack) (Clear Color) Vinyl LP
Here is the sleeper for the jazz and hip-hop heads. Akari Kaida and Yoshino Aoki scored Capcom's 1997 RPG Breath of Fire III in acid jazz, bossa, and head-nod grooves that sound less like a fantasy adventure and more like a lost rare groove session. Ship To Shore's double LP on clear vinyl has become the record we pull when someone insists game music is not for them. It converts people. Crate diggers who never owned a PlayStation buy it on sound alone.
Final Fantasy IV - Song of Heroes Original Soundtrack (Japanese Import) Vinyl LP
Final Fantasy IV, the 1991 RPG that gave the series its emotional depth, gets the deluxe treatment on Song of Heroes, a limited Japanese vinyl pressing of orchestral and arranged music from Uematsu's score. This is the sound of game melodies standing on a concert stage and holding the room. Nintendo - The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Original Soundtrack CD
Breath of the Wild rebuilt Zelda around open air and silence, and its 2017 score follows suit: spare piano figures that gather into full themes only when the moment earns it. This official Nippon Columbia set collects 211 tracks from the game, a complete document of one of the most quietly influential scores of its decade. For fans of minimal and ambient piano music, this is the import CD to start with. The 30th anniversary Zelda collection and the Skyward Sword soundtrack share the same shelf when you want the series' melodic side.
Disasterpeace - Hyper Light Drifter (Multi-Color) Vinyl LP Boxset
Disasterpeace scored the 2016 indie adventure Hyper Light Drifter in ruined-cathedral synth tones, all decaying pads and buried melodies, and the result plays like a great lost ambient techno album. Iam8bit's multi-color boxset presents it the way that label built its reputation: as an art object first. If your tastes run toward Boards of Canada or Tim Hecker, this is the record on this list that will not leave your turntable.
Trigg & Gusset - Blue Prince (Original Soundtrack) Vinyl LP
The field is still growing, and Blue Prince is the proof. Trigg & Gusset scored the 2025 puzzle adventure, built around an ever-shifting manor of rooms, with library-music jazz and chamber moods that feel pulled from a dusty estate sale in the best way. Iam8bit's vinyl pressing bottles that atmosphere. It is the newest title on this list and already one of the most asked-about records in our soundtracks section.
