Be With Records present a reissue of Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett's Synthesizer and Percussion, originally released in 1974. Released the same year as its KPM companion piece Synthesis, this is Hawkshaw and Bennett's second collection of what is basically minimal G-funk, with overtones of primitive acid house, and it is ridiculously good. The official library sales pitch promised "the many distinctive sounds of the ARP Synthesizer plus percussion in various moods and tempos," but this is one of the duo's wilder, more forward-thinking joints. Bennett's tough drums underpin prominent bass, keys and bubbling synths, alongside Hawkshaw's deranged clavinet-funk-rock, with heavenly break loops galore. Opener "Mon Amour" is ultra-smooth funk, while the seminal "Oddball" is an incredible hard electro strut with a knocking break. "Mile High Swinger" is a tranquil Spaghetti Western whistling theme over double-tempo movement, and the pulsating "Auto Pilot" rides a percussive groove elevated by electric piano and synthesizer. Check "Driving Force", "Home Run" and "Pacesetter" for electroid prog-funk dripped in acid squelch, with the five final tracks given over to beatless synth workouts. The audio comes from the original analog tapes, remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis, with sleeve reproduction by Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM's brand identity. 180 gram vinyl.
