Recorded in Sapporo in 1977, Mellow Dream is the second album from self-taught Japanese jazz pianist Ryo Fukui, the follow-up to his now-revered debut Scenery. Working in a trio with bassist Satoshi Denpo and his brother Yoshinori Fukui on drums, Fukui moves between Bill Evans-style lyricism on the gorgeous title track and McCoy Tyner-sized fire on the nine-minute "Horizon." With three original compositions and a deeper, more confident touch, it's a cult cornerstone of Japanese jazz that more than holds its own against Scenery.
