The success of Shaft and Superfly ignited an explosion of independent Black-themed films whose soundtracks remain rich fodder for crate diggers, and the once-lost 1974 flick Solomon King sits near the top of the list. Written, directed, produced by, and starring Oakland entrepreneur Sal Watts, the film drew on a wealth of local talent: southern-soul stalwart and Ray Charles collaborator Jimmy Lewis arranged and conducted the score, backed by the cream of Oakland's thriving soul-funk scene. Original copies fetch serious money when they surface at all. Working with Deaf Crocodile, who restored the film, Real Gone presents the soundtrack in expanded form with bonus cuts pulled from rare 45s on Watts' Sal/Wa label. Propulsive beats, silky strings, and wah-wah guitar make this tiger swirl pressing a 70s soul-funk revelation.
