Where the 2016 self-titled debut was made by college friends on a shoestring, American Love Call is the record they dreamed of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in songwriting. Guitarist Blake Rhein says they approach songs the way hip-hop producers do, as likely to pull from 70s folk-rock or classic R&B as from Nas' Illmatic.
