In the fall of 2012, Durand Jones left small-town Louisiana for Indiana, alto saxophone in tow, to enroll at the Jacobs School of Music. Being a singer was never the plan, but he soon found himself fronting a rowdy band belting out "Dock of the Bay" to a basement of undergrads. That band became The Indications, with Aaron Frazer on drums, Blake Rhein on guitar, Kyle Houpt on bass, and Justin Hubler on organ. Inspired by dusty, obscure 45s from names like The Ethics, Brothers of Soul, and The Icemen, they set out to make a record steeped in heavy drums, blown-out vocals, and deep grooves, recording on Sunday evenings around a Tascam 4-track. With comparisons drawn to Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, and Al Green, the one thing setting them apart from those greats is their youth.
