The Philadelphia poet and singer glides between spoken-word intimacy and full-throated soul, backed by warm, live-band arrangements from the A Touch of Jazz production crew that draw on jazz, hip-hop and gospel in equal measure. "A Long Walk," "Gettin' in the Way" and "He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)" remain touchstones of the era, but the whole album rewards a front-to-back listen.
