Well before Shuggie Otis cut his debut, music was central to his life. The son of rhythm-and-blues legend Johnny Otis, he learned guitar by age two and performed professionally with his father's band at eleven, later playing on records for Frank Zappa, Al Kooper, Etta James, and George Duke. Widespread mainstream success eluded him for much of his career; his best-known release is 1974's Inspiration Information, which found new life in the 2000s. Dig a little deeper, though, and there is gold in the album right before it: his 1971 sophomore record Freedom Flight. Produced by his father Johnny, it builds on the lush, baroque string arrangements, hard funk rhythms, and funky blues melodies of his debut, with most instruments played by Shuggie himself and backing from session greats George Duke and Aynsley Dunbar. It also features the original "Strawberry Letter 23," a monster hit for The Brothers Johnson three years later. A treasure of deft technical skill and virtuosic composition.
