Released March 23, 2004 on Stones Throw, Madvillainy is the only album from Madvillain — the union of masked rapper MF DOOM and producer Madlib — and it's widely regarded as DOOM's magnum opus and one of the greatest hip-hop records ever made. Madlib built most of the beats in a Brazilian hotel room with little more than a Boss SP-303 sampler and a turntable, while DOOM layered on dense, free-associative, villain-mythos wordplay across 22 tracks with no hooks and no filler. Famously, an unfinished version leaked in 2003, nearly derailing the project before the duo regrouped to finish it. Decades on, it's become a shared touchstone for lo-fi and underground hip-hop alike — essential, foundational listening and the cornerstone of any serious collection.
