When composer Yas-Kaz left Tokyo for Bali in the mid-1970s to study gamelan, he opened a door to a world of sound and rhythm that would become known as new age, and that happened to soundtrack the golden era of anime. Across eight tracks, this collection spans classics and rarities that found kinship in electronic and acoustic instrumentation, often pairing spiritual or environmental themes with refined, non-Western percussion. Among them is "Kaneda" by Geinoh Yamashirogumi, the group that masterminded the soundtrack to the dystopian anime Akira, alongside work by Norihiro Tsuru, Yoichiro Yoshikawa, and Chumei Watanabe. Following Time Capsule's 2022 deep-dive into manga and anime synth-pop, this vinyl-only collection broadens the picture of how soundtracks shaped Japanese new age for a generation.
