A vivid survey of the diverse, long-neglected releases of Gaye Mody Camara, a young Soninke artist raised in Mali's Kayes region who settled in France in 1977. He started out selling wax, kola nuts, and other goods in Paris before distributing cassettes and, in time, producing a multitude of recordings for his own label, Camara Production. The result is a fascinating window into a modern diaspora of an ancient culture, spanning Malian zouk, Mauritanian reggae, and many grooving, head-spinning directions. Prepared in full collaboration with Camara, with riso-printed notes.
