Produced by Cate Le Bon, Secret Love began in Peckham rehearsal spaces, with all four members, frontperson Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton, and bassist Lewis Maynard, writing and responding to each other in the room. The follow-up to Stumpwork evolved through sessions at Jeff Tweedy's Chicago studio the Loft, with Gilla Band's Alan Duggan and Daniel Fox in Dublin, and finally with Le Bon at Black Box in the Loire Valley. It finds the south London four-piece taking their place in rock's avant garde, fusing the paranoia of early-80s US hardcore with the dry strut of Keith Richards, stoner rock, playful no wave, and pastoral fingerpicking, while Shaw's spoken delivery places her in a lineage stretching from Laurie Anderson to Life Without Buildings.
