Romance is the fourth album from Dublin band Fontaines D.C., released on XL Recordings and a deliberate break from the Irish-rooted post-punk that made their name. Produced by James Ford and recorded in France and London, it trades those themes for a futuristic, dystopian vision, pulling in trip-hop atmosphere, nu-metal bite, grunge weight and shoegaze haze. Starburster lands with rapped, rattled verses, Favourite rides jangling guitars, Here's the Thing leans into horror-film drama and In the Modern World borrows from Akira. The band's boldest turn yet, and a record that rewards playing loud.
