The only group on the Black Jazz roster, The Awakening deserve to be heralded as one of the great bands in early '70s jazz; that they aren't owes much to the label's distribution troubles, with original copies now commanding hundreds of dollars. Mirage, their second album from 1973, was the last they made together, featuring the same Chicago, AACM-centric lineup as the debut plus bassist Rufus Reid on a couple of tracks. Spiritual jazz, free jazz, soul jazz, fusion: the band weave all those threads of early '70s African-American music into something greater than the sum of its parts. A bit less overtly pan-African than its predecessor, Mirage is more abstract and varied in mood, yet no less powerful and transporting. This blue with black swirl edition, limited to 500 copies, comes with liner notes by Pat Thomas.
