Third World Underground brings together pianist Dollar Brand, the South African master later known as Abdullah Ibrahim, with Don Cherry on trumpet and Carlos Ward on alto sax and flute. Originally issued in Japan on the Trio label in 1974, it is a loose, searching trio session where township melody, modal piano and free playing flow together, the three players even adding voices along the way. Brand lays down long rolling lines, Cherry answers with bright, bold phrases and Ward soars over the top. "Don's Song" and "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro" are highlights. This Wewantsounds vinyl edition brings a long-overlooked session back to the racks.
