Kamal Keila was a central figure in the Sudanese jazz scene that ran from the mid-sixties until the Islamist turn of the late eighties shut it down. These two studio reels, recorded in August 1992 and kept in their boxes ever since, hold five tracks in English and five in Arabic. The grooves lean toward Ethiopia as much as toward Arabic music, with Fela and American funk audible underneath. His English lyrics, freer from censorship, argue for the unity of Sudan, for peace between Muslims and Christians, and for the war orphans he calls shmasha.
