This is not a survey of Libyan music, it is a dig: fifteen tracks pulled from cassettes traded by hand across Benghazi, Tripoli and beyond between the 1980s and the early 2000s. Independent artists worked from makeshift home studios or travelled to Tunisia and Egypt to record, and what came back mixes reggae rhythm, synth disco, gritty pop, house and funk. Reggae in particular took on a local accent, slowed toward the cadence of shaabi and used to carry identity and pride. Two LPs, compiled by Habibi Funk.
