Where Suicide's label leaned toward a synthetic disco sound, Vega pulled in a different direction, digging into blues, rockabilly, early rock and roll, and his lifelong love of Elvis. Layered in a minimalist, intentional way, the result is a fiercely singular record, from the jiving swagger of "Jukebox Babe" (a hit in France) to the haunted mutant rockabilly of "Bye Bye Bayou," later covered by LCD Soundsystem. Remastered by Josh Bonati from the original tapes for Sacred Bones, it stands as a cult declaration of artistic independence from one of New York's most uncompromising artists.
