Released in limited numbers alongside Black Mahogani in 2004 and never repressed, Kenny Dixon Jr's Black Mahogani II was a departure from his house-based work, drawing on his late-night jazz band sessions. Its centerpiece is the eighteen-minute "When She Follows," a deep jazz session of skittering live drums, electric Fender Rhodes, loping acoustic bass, and distant saxophone, drifting like a Detroit techno cut replayed by Gil Scott-Heron's band in 1970. "Rectify" follows in the same mode, blending jazz within a Detroit techno framework, before two revisions close the set. A stone-cold rarity from one of Detroit's deepest voices.
