For nearly a decade, Tycho was the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with Awake, his second LP for Ghostly International, the solo project evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, it's in many ways the first true Tycho record. After touring extensively behind 2011's Dive, Hansen's sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole, and the addition of Rory O'Connor's live drumming sent him back to the studio with a more precise vision, aiming to capture the energetic, driven feel of the live show. Bringing musicians into Tycho's process, including Zac Brown on guitars and bass, was a step toward expanding his songwriting and advancing the project beyond its earlier sound. Tracks like "Montana" and "Awake" depart from previous material, while "See" and "Dye" bridge the old and new. This was the first time Hansen dropped everything to focus on a single artistic pursuit, and Awake is where the music becomes the focus.
