In the late 1970s a sound started bubbling up out of Minneapolis that nobody in the pop world saw coming: slick, synthetic, technologically ahead of itself, futuristic funk given the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. The Twin Cities were never known for a large Black population, but they held a tight-knit community of musicians working through the late 70s and early 80s toward a radical rethink of American dance music.
