For Fans Of

Dave Pike was a vibraphonist by trade, but on his 1966 Atlantic debut he picks up the marimba and never puts it down. Producer Herbie Mann surrounded him with an absurd lineup: a young Herbie Hancock on organ, an instrument he almost never returned to, plus Clark Terry on trumpet, Billy Butler on guitar and Grady Tate on drums. The record slides between soul jazz, Latin rhythm and pure 1960s lounge, and its reading of Sunny has been quietly feeding crate diggers for decades. Reissued by Nature Sounds. Cocktail-hour cool with serious players underneath it.
