French Exit is the 2014 debut from TV Girl, the Los Angeles project led by Brad Petering, and a masterclass in sample-built indie pop. Petering and producer Jason Wyman stitch dusty girl-group and easy-listening snippets under deadpan, wry vocals about crushes, jealousy and the small cruelties of dating. "Lovers Rock" flips the Shirelles, "Birds Don't Sing" lifts the Poni-Tails, and "Pantyhose" and "Daughter of a Cop" show how sharp the writing is underneath the haze. Self-released at the time, it found a huge second life online years later and now reads as a modern indie-pop cornerstone.
