Pretzel Logic is Steely Dan's 1974 third album, the one where Donald Fagen and Walter Becker perfected their trick of making deeply sophisticated music go down easy. "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" opens the record, a sinuous slice of jazz-pop that pairs piano balladry with a samba-like groove. Fagen and Becker write everything and lean on a rotating cast of session players, so the musicianship is sharp throughout: a sassy cover of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo," the bop rush of "Parker's Band," a tribute to Charlie Parker. Shorter, tighter songs packed with harmonies, witty wordplay and hooks that stick.
