Juice is classic jazz-funk fusion from the late, great Japanese guitarist Ryo Kawasaki, recorded in New York and originally released on RCA in 1976. One of the pioneers of jazz fusion, Kawasaki worked with greats like Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton, and Bobbi Humphrey, and later collaborated with Roland and Korg on early guitar-synthesizer technology. A much-loved record among crate diggers, its tracks have been sampled across hip-hop, with the spiritual funk jam "Bamboo Child" flipped by Diamond D, Puff Daddy, and Kool G Rap. From the drum-break-driven opener "Raisins" onward, it rivals The Headhunters at their finest, threading tripped-out synths through the emerging disco sound of the era.
