Tales of great high school funk bands are common thanks to a wave of reissues, but great high school soul bands remain rare, and The Equatics' brooding masterpiece Doin' It!!! is one of them. Though it could pass as a funk record, the Equatics shone as a soul band, as inspired by the melancholy of Bill Withers as by the psychedelic soul of Isaac Hayes, offering world-weary, beat-heavy ballads that stand alongside any of the great independent soul outfits of the early 1970s. That a group of teenagers, seventeen on average at the time of recording, could deliver something this angst-ridden and assured is remarkable. This official reissue was licensed by the band's bassist and leader, Benjamin Crawford.
