Reggae arrived in Libya through Bob Marley and never left. Ibrahim Hesnawi, born and raised in Tripoli, is the reason: he ran Jamaican reggae into traditional Libyan music so fluidly that the two stopped sounding separate, borrowing the steady marching tempo of wedding chants and putting roots and dancehall on top. "Never Understand" carries warm keys, a thick bouncing bass and English lyrics, and could pass for a missing Marley cut. It took five years to find tapes in good enough shape to master, since Hesnawi's own studio reels were long gone.
