Released in 2012 on Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope, good kid, m.A.A.d city is Kendrick Lamar's major-label debut, a cinematic "short film" tracing a single day in his teenage Compton life with novelistic detail. Skits, voicemails and shifting perspectives stitch the songs into one story, and the songs themselves hit hard: "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe," "Swimming Pools (Drank)" and the hazy "Money Trees" pair vivid storytelling with era-defining production. It is the record that announced Kendrick as the voice of his generation. Non-negotiable for any modern rap collection, here on double vinyl.
