Madvillainy is the only album from Madvillain, the meeting of masked rapper MF DOOM and producer Madlib, released on Stones Throw in 2004. Madlib built most of the beats in a Brazilian hotel room with little more than a Boss SP-303 and a portable turntable, while DOOM layered on dense, free-associative villain-mythos wordplay across 22 short tracks with no hooks and no filler. An unfinished version leaked in 2003 and nearly derailed the project before the pair regrouped to finish it. Decades on, it remains a shared touchstone for lo-fi and underground hip-hop and a cornerstone of any serious collection.
