Selected Ambient Works 85-92, originally released on R&S Records in 1993, was the album that crossed over from the techno world into indie homes. Stories surround this gorgeous, ethereal record: that it includes tracks from 1985, when Aphex Twin, aka Richard D. James, was just fourteen, and that it was largely made with instruments James built himself. The music matters more than any of that, because here Aphex Twin expanded well beyond the ambient music of Brian Eno, fusing lush soundscapes with oceanic beats and basslines. Both the birthplace and the benchmark of modern electronic music. This official 2LP repress uses the 2013 remasters cut from the original DAT tapes by Matt Colton, in the original artwork.
