The Awakening were the only group recorded by Black Jazz, for which they made two albums that rank among the most collectible in the label's entire catalog. Recorded in 1972, Hear, Sense and Feel was the band's debut. Being from Chicago, their lineup boasted heavy ties to the AACM collective: bassist Reggie Willis and tenor saxophonist and flautist Ari Brown were members who appeared alongside Muhal Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, and Anthony Braxton, while other members came up through the city's soul-jazz scene in Young Holt Unlimited. The record lands in that sweet spot between the free and Afrocentric explorations of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the rhythm-heavy soul jazz of Chicago labels like Brunswick and Cadet. This blue with black swirl edition features liner notes by Pat Thomas and is limited to 500 copies.
