The Tracyanne Campbell-led outfit, reunited with producer Jari Haapalainen, have crafted their most sophisticated and hard-fought effort to date, their first since the 2015 passing of founding keyboardist Carey Lander, to whom "Sugar Almond" is addressed. Recorded in the same room where Queen wrote "Bohemian Rhapsody," the album strips away the reverb of earlier records, leaning on piano, synths, Hammond organ, and drum machines, while the tinges of country and soul that give their baroque pop its bittersweet edge have never been clearer. From the pedal-steel heartbreak of lead single "Big Love" to the western shuffle of "The Light Nights," it is the sound of a band more confident in its purpose than ever, at once sad and exhilarating.
