Khruangbin's fourth studio album, A La Sala ("To the Room" in Spanish), is an exercise in returning in order to go further. Where 2020's Mordechai was a party record, A La Sala is the measured morning after, a gorgeously airy set completed with only longtime engineer Steve Christensen and minimal overdubs. Bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson Jr., and guitarist Mark "Marko" Speer scale the band down to scale up: crisp reverb-heavy melodies dance around minimalist almost-dub basslines and a tightened-up drum pocket. The trio's touch-points, from spaghetti-western scores to West African discos, G-funk, and ambient found-sounds, are now ingrained characteristics rather than far-flung experiments. The vinyl arrives in seven distinct covers and color-sets, each designed by the band from Marko's travel photographs.
