Basement Screams was Naked Raygun's first release, the opening shot from a band that became a staple of the Chicago scene from the early '80s into the early '90s. Founded in 1980 by Marco Pezzati, Jeff Pezzati, and Santiago Durango, the band melded pop hooks with hardcore in a uniquely accessible, politically charged style that came to be known as the Chicago Sound. Shortly after this record, Durango left to join Big Black and was replaced by John Haggerty, whose buzzsaw guitar would define Raygun's run, helping make them one of the most influential punk bands of the decade.
