Osmium is the debut album by Parliament, led by George Clinton. It has a psychedelic soul sound and a spirit of experimentation closer to early Funkadelic than to the later R&B-inspired Parliament records, originally released in September 1970 on Invictus. The personnel included the five Parliament singers and the five backing musicians known as Funkadelic, the same lineup that cut Funkadelic's self-titled debut that same year. Contractual difficulties then halted recording under the Parliament name until 1974, when Clinton signed the act to Casablanca and positioned it as an R&B counterpoint to the more rock-oriented Funkadelic.
