After touring behind their first full-length, Ultramega OK (1988), the band signed with A&M and began work on their first major-label record. The songs feature a metal-leaning grunge sound with unusual, unorthodox time signatures, and it became the band's first album to chart on the Billboard 200. It was the last Soundgarden album to feature original bassist Hiro Yamamoto.
