Born in Detroit in 1942, Wendell Harrison studied piano, clarinet, and tenor saxophone and was performing and recording with Marvin Gaye, Grant Green, Sun Ra, and Hank Crawford while still in his teens. In 1971 he co-founded the legendary Afro-centric Tribe record label and collective, later co-founding the REBIRTH organization and his own WenHa label. Released on REBIRTH in 1988, The Carnivorous Lady features an all-star Detroit cast including Marcus Belgrave, Pamela Wise, and Shirley Hayden of Parliament/Funkadelic. It blends spiritual hard-bop jazz with smoother fusion, infectious boogie synths, R&B vocals, and mind-blowing jazz-funk percussion, a groovy, timeless sound well ahead of its time. Tidal Waves Music presents the first-ever vinyl reissue, a deluxe 180-gram edition with the original artwork.
