A Detroit singer-songwriter and composer, William Odell Hughes recorded his 1981 debut Cruisin with saxophonist and producer Wendell Harrison after the two met on a city bus route, with arrangements by Harrison and pianist Pamela Wise of the Tribe collective. The album carries all the best characteristics of the era: funky playful beats, soulful honey-dipped vocals, mellow soul, and electrifying disco boogie, with Harrison's flute and synth pads giving it a warm, relaxed groove. References to universal awareness and the spirituality of Tribe run throughout.
