Across 1979 to 1982, a generation of French dreamers mixed New York-style funk with electronic, Eastern, and African sounds, threading genre-crossing arrangements and often chanted lyrics through a newly hybrid urban culture that would help give rise to French hip-hop. Circulated largely on cassette between Paris, Lille, Strasbourg, and Marseille, these little-known artists shaped a singular style blending the sounds of their original cultures with their adopted country. This 2026 repress is a double LP with insert, featuring Phil Barney, JM Black, Ettika, Sammy Massamba, Shams Dinn, Alec Mansion, and many more.
