Richard D. James Album is Aphex Twin's 1996 Warp album, the record that made his drill and bass sound at its most playful and personal. Melodies as sweet as a music box run straight into hyperspeed breakbeats and quasi-jungle rhythms, with string arrangements, sampled voices and Cornish place names threaded through. Fingerbib and Goon Gumpas are tender enough for a lullaby, 4 and Cornish Acid rattle at full tilt, and Girl/Boy Song, the album's single, ties both moods together. Ten tracks in just over half an hour, and an essential document of electronic music in the 90s.
