Humbug is Arctic Monkeys' third album, released on Domino in 2009, and the moment the Sheffield band traded their wiry, fast-talking indie for something darker and heavier. Recorded partly in the California desert with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age producing, alongside sessions in Brooklyn with James Ford, it leans into menacing riffs, psychedelic haze and Alex Turner's increasingly strange lyrics. "Crying Lightning," "My Propeller" and "Cornerstone" lead the way. Divisive on release, it now reads as the hinge that made everything after it possible.
