Robbie Chater and Darren Seltmann spent years buying records by the crate and cutting them into something that sounds like one continuous summer afternoon. Estimates of the sample count run from 3,500 upward, but the trick of Since I Left You is that it never feels like a collage: the Melbourne duo stitched the pieces into actual songs, and 'Frontier Psychiatrist' and the title track still play like pop records rather than puzzles. Twenty-five years on it remains the high-water mark for sample-based production. Two records, Canadian pressing, imported.
