Betty Davis wrote, arranged and led her own sessions at a point when the industry had no category for a Black woman doing exactly that. Her 1974 second album opens with Shoo B Doop and Cop Him, later sampled by Ice Cube, and runs through Don't Call Her No Tramp and the slow grinding He Was a Big Freak without softening anything. The cover, all silver boots and defiance, was built to answer the science fiction poses of her peers with something more physical. Light in the Attic's expanded edition adds a gatefold jacket and a twenty page booklet.
