By All Means Necessary is the record where KRS-One stopped being a battle rapper and started being a teacher. Made after Scott La Rock's murder, it trades the raw Criminal Minded sound for something sharper and more deliberate, with "My Philosophy" and "Stop the Violence" laying out a position rather than just a threat. The Malcolm X cover pose says the rest. KRS handled most of the production himself, and the writing still reads as some of the most quotable in the genre.
